" One should do the things or work in which he/she is interested", this is the line which i have been told by everyone since my childhood. So, I always tried to do things in which i am interseted. I prepared for jee because I wanted to do b.tech from any one of the seven IIT's. After qualifying jee, i thought that i should do something different and I opted for biotechnology in IIT Madras, hoping that i would get to learn something new, which will be very interesting and something which will be very useful for me in future. But in due course of one and half year my stay, I came to know that how wrong I was.
Sem by sem 3 sem passed and i thought at least in one of the sem i will get something interseting and different to learn and know, which non of the other engineers get to learn. And finally, my this wish came true in my 4th sem, when i got to do courses like Biochemistry and Genetics( i am learning some other courses too but they are not worth mentioning here, because chemical guys also learn them).
Anyone who would be having slightest knowledge of bio and chemistry, can tell how interesting would be the combination of both. Yeah the combination made by the two, biochemistry is very interesting and as a subject it offers us lot of things to learn, some of which are protien modelling techniques, techniques involved in estimation of various bio molecules etc.
During course of my prepration for quiz for biochem, i came across these interesting topic and learned them thourghly. But my this preparartion cupped badly in quiz because the paper was too maggu level and any maggu can score cent percent marks in this paper. I would like to highlight some of the things which we had to mug, 1) structure of 20 amino acids, 2) enzymes and their co-factors, 3) enzyme and their function , 4) two amino acids which are helix breaker, mind it ! not the reason y r they helix breaker, and last but not the least bond dissociation energy of C-C and C=C bond. Are above quesions interesting and r they going to generate any interest in the students, r the maggu type question would prepare us for the industries, where all aspire to work after completing our b.tech, i think NO!!!!!, they can't generate any interest but they can kill the interest, they are not going to preapre us for any indursty( i brought industry here in disscussion because our respected dean has stopped foregin interns in 3rd year because he want students to have experince of indian industry) . By making the question maggu level, prof has tried to make an interesting subject uninteresting. Now and onwards non of us will try to read and understand the concept but we will just mug the important tables and womit them in exam, because non of us wnat to learn, we just want to get decent grade and maintain our Branch or Insti position. Non of us will take interest in class and put enough effort to learn concept, so we will never get to know the beauty of subject and lastly, by framing such type of question papers profs are just taking us on the path of which there is no end, in short if profs continue to do so, the product of IIT's won't be that good as it is supposed to be, which will lead to the fall of standard of IIT( standard of IIT is already falling becasue of dirty politics going on in country). As result of which junta who is interested in IIT will loose their interest, in the same way as i lost my interest in biochemistry.

welcome to blogging!
nice write up. interesting comparison between the course and the overall situation. i agree, these profs are ruining the future of the nation.. not that its not already in ruins.
my advice.. spend the rest of the time somehow and get the hell out of here!
Well pawan, I would accept it. But for this, I think putting all the blame on just profs is not going to solve the problem at all, for they will take it as an ego-issue and then there is no solution which will be possible. I think that the enthusiasm level among students has also gone out, but again, students can't also take the entire blame. Both sides are responsible for this. The problem is lack of communication between students and profs. I would like to know how many attended the recent meeting last monday (the one previous to this week's) about revising the b.tech curriculum..i can say honestly i wasn't there and i got to know there weren't many as well. So if we don't put enthu, then at least we shouldn't expect them to, for we are as much guilty as them.
So, stop the blame game, and let's start doing something. For all those reading this, I know you may abuse me or criticize me, but I would just request you to at least email to the dean and other profs on the b.tech committee regarding your suggestions on the curriculum. At least let's put some effort, if it goes waste, then we can definitely criticize the profs, otherwise we are as lazy as them, and both groups should stop expecting from each other
and i agree with u abhishek but only partly....the profs are ruining the future of the nation(we) and we are also ruining ourselves by not doing anything about it....so if spending time somehow is the motto, we may as well stop criticizing the profs.
hmmm. a good job! it is a well known psychological phenomenon that any subject can be made interesting by the way it is taught. thats because every subject has a beauty which is unique. its whether we choose to appreciate the beauty or not that determines our "area of interest". so the same holds good for the reverse... the problem with the indian education system is that teachers are told what to teach in a subject and not how... that makes all the difference.
well Jaya I agree with you that every subject has beauty that is unique to it but it is the job of teacher or to say professors to bring out that unique beauty infront of students, as it is almost impossible for us to find out the beauty of particular subject in the due course of four month when other subjects are also there. I would like to make one more point here that in premier institute like IITs professors are never asked to teach the syllabus and if professors think that they are teaching too much in given time then they can go for curriculum change because it they who decided what should be taught and what should not be...so, i don't think we can blame education system of India completely. it is the fault of professors and students too.
